Overview
To provide faculty with practical strategies for preparing competitive grant applications and securing research funding. To increase awareness of career pathways in academic research, including the physician-scientist track and other clinician-investigator roles. To offer guidance on balancing clinical responsibilities with research activities, and managing time effectively as a physician-scientist. To demystify the grant review and scoring process, helping faculty understand how to align proposals with reviewer expectations. To support the development of a sustainable research agenda, including collaboration-building, career planning, and aligning research goals with institutional priorities. To connect faculty with institutional resources, such as grant writing support, research administration, core facilities, and mentoring programs. To foster a community of interdisciplinary faculty scholars, encouraging peer support, mentorship, and collaboration across departments and colleges.

Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, learners will be able to:

  1. 1. Develop strategies to identify research themes capable of supporting separate R01 applications
  2. 2. Formulate a long-term grant submission timeline that balances new R01 applications with renewal cycles to prevent funding gaps
  3. 3. Evaluate the successful grant-seeking behaviors demonstrated in the case study of Dr. X to adapt specific grantsmanship techniques for their own research portfolios.
  4. 4. Identify specific submission and resubmission strategies and how to address critical reviewer feedback to move an unfunded R01 application toward successful funding.
  5. 5. Analyze the resource and personnel infrastructure required to manage multiple R01 projects simultaneously without compromising scientific rigor.
  6. 6. Develop a checklist for assessing "grant-readiness" of potential research aims by comparing them against successful milestones.
