The unique features of artificial intelligence applications in medical diagnosis and procedures present special challenges for assessing their safety and efficacy.  The lack of a universal standard for regularity approval of these applications impedes both pharmaceutical and clinical expertise. How we navigate between these alternatives depends fundamentally on how we conceive of the nature of artificial intelligence and its uses.
